A new book by journalist Bob Woodward claims that former U.S. President Donald Trump maintained contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin after leaving office. According to the book, War, Trump made at least seven phone calls to Putin, with one conversation occurring earlier this year. The claims have been rejected by Trump’s team, with his communications director, Steven Cheung, labeling the allegations as false. Trump also dismissed the reports, calling Woodward a “bad storyteller.”
The Kremlin has denied the accusations, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that the reports of regular communication between Trump and Putin are untrue.
The release of Woodward’s book has reignited concerns about Trump’s relationship with Putin, a topic that first arose during his 2016 presidential campaign when allegations surfaced of Russian interference. Although a special investigation by Robert Mueller found no direct conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, the topic has remained politically significant.
Additionally, Woodward claims that Trump sent COVID-19 testing machines to Putin in 2020 at the onset of the pandemic, a claim which has drawn criticism from political figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris.
Woodward's book also addresses other major international issues, including President Joe Biden’s handling of the war in Ukraine and his tensions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
