Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced an expansion of Israel's war objectives to ensure the safe return of residents who fled areas near the Lebanese border. Cross-border fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, an armed group in Lebanon, has been ongoing since the conflict in Gaza began, resulting in mass evacuations on both sides of the border.
Netanyahu's security cabinet approved this new objective during an overnight meeting. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant highlighted that military action is seen as the remaining option to facilitate the return of northern residents to their homes. Hezbollah has indicated it would withdraw if a ceasefire were reached in Gaza, but Gallant warned that time to secure an agreement is limited.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to focus on ceasefire discussions during his upcoming visit to Egypt, as efforts to negotiate a truce continue amidst the conflict.
