A group of former national security officials and military leaders has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential election. Over 700 former officials signed an open letter arguing that Harris is the best candidate to safeguard American democracy, calling her a “serious and capable” leader. The endorsement, published by National Security Leaders for America, highlighted Harris' commitment to American ideals and contrasted her leadership with former President Donald Trump's.
However, the letter has drawn criticism, particularly from those recalling the 2020 Hunter Biden laptop controversy. Fred Fleitz, a former Trump National Security Council chief of staff, likened this endorsement to the 2020 letter signed by 51 intelligence officials, which initially discredited the Hunter Biden laptop story as potential Russian disinformation. That letter later faced scrutiny when major outlets confirmed the laptop’s authenticity.
Among the signatories of the Harris endorsement are nine officials who also signed the previous letter, including former CIA Directors John Brennan and Michael Hayden. Critics argue that their involvement in both letters raises concerns about political influence within the national security community.
Despite these criticisms, Harris' supporters maintain that she is a strong candidate for president, citing her leadership qualities and experience.
