During a recent "Principals Live" event hosted by Semafor, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) asserted that Vice President Kamala Harris won an open primary to secure the Democratic nomination for the 2024 presidential election. When asked if Pelosi had changed her stance on an open primary following Harris's rising popularity, she maintained that no change was necessary because Harris had effectively won the open primary.
Pelosi emphasized that the absence of other candidates in the race was due to Harris's political acumen. She stated, "Nobody else got in the race because she was politically astute and that was the thought." This claim was met with applause from the audience.
Pelosi further reiterated that while there was an open primary, other candidates chose not to enter, allowing Harris to become the nominee. She noted that President Biden's endorsement of Harris was significant, calling him "the most consequential president of modern times."
Biden had initially won the Democratic presidential primary with 87.09% of the vote. However, he withdrew from the race under pressure and endorsed Harris, who was later declared the Democratic nominee without receiving any votes in the primary election during a virtual roll-call ballot organized by the Democratic National Committee in August.
