House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has requested information from U.S. intelligence agencies regarding an alleged cyberattack by Iranian hackers on former President Donald Trump's campaign. Johnson's demand follows reports that Iran disseminated stolen information from the Trump campaign, which he claims demonstrates Iran's intent to influence the upcoming election in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris.
In a letter sent to the leaders of the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Johnson expressed concerns over the Trump campaign's vulnerability to cyberattacks earlier this summer. He urged the agencies to provide details about the nature of the attacks, the timeline for their detection, and the measures in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
According to previous reports from the federal agencies, unsolicited emails containing stolen material from Trump's campaign were sent by Iran in late June and early July.
Johnson emphasized the need for decisive action from the Biden-Harris Administration to deter foreign interference in U.S. elections, requesting responses from the agencies by October 4. The FBI has acknowledged receipt of Johnson's letter but declined further comment, as did the DNI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
