The Miami Dolphins have condemned the actions of police officers in a recent incident involving their star wide receiver, Tyreek Hill. Bodycam footage released on Monday shows Hill being aggressively pulled from his car by Miami-Dade police officers. He was dragged out, forced to lie face down on the road, and handcuffed. While on the ground, one officer placed a knee on Hill's back and restrained his wrists. Another officer applied a bar hold around Hill’s chest, just below his neck.
The incident occurred on September 8, 2024, near the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens as Hill was en route to the Dolphins' home opener for the new NFL season. The situation escalated when Hill raised his car window during the stop, prompting officers to forcibly remove him. One officer can be heard saying, "If we tell you to do something, do it," as they detained the wide receiver.
The Dolphins organization expressed their outrage, describing the police actions as "maddening, violent, and despicable." In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the team called for immediate action against the officers involved, noting that this incident is a reminder of the dangers many face in such situations. They posed the thought-provoking question: "What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?"
A police union representative argued that Hill was not cooperative at the time of the stop. An officer involved has since been suspended pending an investigation. Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed that his client was charged with reckless driving and driving without a license.
Hill expressed his shock in an interview, recounting how the situation escalated quickly from the moment officers approached his car. He also thanked his teammates, Jonnu Smith and Calais Campbell, who witnessed the scene and stopped to support him during the incident. The investigation into the police conduct continues, with widespread attention on how it will be handled.
