Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has implemented a global ban on RT and other Russian state media outlets. This action follows allegations that these outlets have been involved in foreign interference activities. Meta’s spokesperson confirmed that the ban applies to apps such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, specifically targeting media like RT and Rossiya Segodnya.
RT, which had 7.2 million Facebook followers before the ban, responded by stating its intention to continue sharing its messages despite the restrictions. This move by Meta coincides with recent sanctions imposed by the U.S. government on Russian-controlled media. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted that the effort is part of a broader strategy to counter misinformation, describing RT as aligned with Moscow's intelligence operations.
The U.S. Department of Justice has also indicted two RT employees over an alleged scheme to fund a U.S.-based media outlet to influence political divisions.
