Amer Ghalib, mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan, has announced his endorsement of former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election. Hamtramck, known for its all-Muslim city government, is located in a key battleground state. Ghalib, who immigrated to the United States from Yemen, made his endorsement public through a social media post, stating his support for Trump despite their differing views on certain issues.
The endorsement followed a meeting between Ghalib and Trump in Flint, Michigan, where they discussed matters concerning Arab and Muslim American communities. Shortly after the announcement, Trump shared Ghalib’s endorsement on his Truth Social platform.
Hamtramck became the first U.S. city with an all-Muslim city council and mayor in 2021, bringing national attention to the city. Ghalib, who was elected during this period, described his decision to endorse Trump as one made in consideration of the current political environment.
Michigan is anticipated to play a crucial role in the 2024 election, as it did in previous elections. Polls show a close race between Trump and Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump previously won Michigan in 2016 but lost the state to President Joe Biden in 2020.
With Michigan considered a swing state, the competition between the candidates is expected to be close, as polls show a near tie between Harris and Trump.
