Senator Lindsey Graham has voiced his opinion that North Carolina Republican gubernatorial nominee Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson should have the chance to defend himself against allegations regarding controversial comments posted on a pornographic website. In an interview with NBC News's Meet the Press on Sunday, Graham called the accusations “unnerving” and stated that if the allegations are true, Robinson would be unfit for office.
The controversy arose after CNN reported that Robinson allegedly posted inflammatory remarks on a forum between 2008 and 2012, including calling himself a “black NAZI.” Robinson has denied the allegations, claiming the posts were fabricated, and has refused to step down from the race.
Graham added that if the allegations are false, Robinson should pursue legal action. “He has the best lawsuit in the history of the country for libel,” Graham said, recommending that Robinson hire a top attorney and sue CNN.
The report has created an opportunity for Democrats, with the Harris campaign quickly releasing a video linking Robinson to former President Donald Trump. Polls show a tight race between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, with Trump leading by a narrow margin of 0.1 points in North Carolina.
Graham did not respond when asked whether Trump should withdraw his endorsement of Robinson. Other Republicans, including Sen. J.D. Vance, have also commented, saying the decision ultimately rests with North Carolina voters.
