The Malian military has reported successfully thwarting an attack on a military police facility in Bamako early Tuesday. Gunmen targeted the center in the Feladie district, near Modibo Keita International Airport, resulting in gunfire and explosions.
The army confirmed that the situation is now under control and is conducting security sweeps in the area. Authorities have advised residents to avoid the vicinity and await further updates. The airport was temporarily closed, and nearby schools and UN personnel were urged to limit movement.
Mali has been under military rule since coups in 2020 and 2021 and continues to face challenges from armed rebel groups. This incident marks a rare act of violence near the capital, as most fighting has occurred outside the city. The government has shifted alliances from France to Russia to address ongoing security concerns in the northern regions.
