Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has warned that Russia may be planning attacks on Ukraine's nuclear facilities as winter approaches. Sybiha called for increased international oversight to prevent potential damage to critical infrastructure, which could lead to a nuclear incident with far-reaching consequences.
The foreign minister highlighted the risk of damage to open distribution devices at nuclear power plants and key transmission substations. He urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Ukraine’s allies to establish permanent monitoring missions at these sites to ensure their safe operation.
Sybiha expressed gratitude to the IAEA for its decision to extend missions at several nuclear facilities across Ukraine, but he called for accelerated efforts to establish a more robust presence at all relevant sites.
According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), Ukraine faces an electricity shortfall that could reach 6 gigawatts this winter, equivalent to roughly one-third of the nation’s peak demand.
