Kim Jong Un is the supreme leader of North Korea, also known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Born on January 8, 1984, he is the third son of Kim Jong Il and the grandson of Kim Il Sung, the country’s founding leader. He was officially declared as the successor to his father in 2010 and assumed power in December 2011 following Kim Jong Il's death. His ascension marked the continuation of the Kim family’s dynastic rule, which has led North Korea since its establishment in 1948.

Kim Jong Un’s leadership has been characterized by a focus on strengthening the country’s military capabilities, particularly its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Since taking power, he has overseen several nuclear tests and long-range missile launches, attracting international attention and leading to multiple rounds of sanctions from the United Nations and other countries. Despite these sanctions, North Korea has continued its development of weapons systems, citing its national defense interests.

Under Kim’s rule, there have been efforts to improve North Korea’s infrastructure, particularly in Pyongyang, where several large construction projects have been completed. His government has also introduced limited economic reforms, allowing for certain market activities within the socialist framework, though the country’s economy remains heavily centralized.

Diplomatically, Kim Jong Un has held several notable summits with foreign leaders. In 2018 and 2019, he met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, marking a rare moment of direct dialogue between the two Koreas. During the same period, Kim also met with U.S. President Donald Trump in a series of unprecedented meetings aimed at discussing denuclearization and reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula. These talks, however, did not result in lasting agreements, and diplomatic relations have since become strained.

Information about Kim Jong Un’s personal life remains limited. He is married to Ri Sol Ju, who has appeared at some public events, but much about their family life remains undisclosed. Kim’s health has occasionally been the subject of speculation, particularly after he missed public appearances in 2020, though no confirmed details about his medical condition have been released.

Kim Jong Un continues to hold a central role in North Korea’s government and military. His title includes Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission. Under his leadership, the state’s official ideology of Juche, emphasizing self-reliance, continues to be a defining aspect of North Korean policy.
