Vice President Kamala Harris has refunded a $500 campaign donation from imam Asad Zaman of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, following reports of his history of sharing antisemitic content on social media. A Harris campaign official confirmed the refund after the donation was reported on the Federal Election Commission’s website.
Zaman, who was referred to as a "master teacher" by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in 2018, came under scrutiny for sharing content such as a Hamas press release and a pro-Hitler film link. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Republican Jewish Coalition criticized Zaman for these posts, leading to calls for political figures to distance themselves from him.
The Harris campaign emphasized that Walz and Zaman do not have a personal relationship, with Walz condemning Hamas terrorism. The campaign's move to return the donation is seen as an effort to distance itself from Zaman’s controversial remarks and actions, especially after he expressed solidarity with Palestinians following Hamas attacks on Israel in 2023.
Zaman did not respond to requests for comment regarding the donation refund
