Montana’s absentee voting system experienced a technical glitch that resulted in Vice President Kamala Harris being omitted from the presidential ballot when it went live on Friday at 8 a.m. The electronic absentee system mistakenly excluded Harris, listing only former President Donald Trump and independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for voters. Following reports about the missing candidate, the Montana Secretary of State’s office took the program offline for troubleshooting and restored it by Friday afternoon.
Affected voters were provided the opportunity to recast their ballots, which were updated to include the complete list of presidential nominees later that same day. Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen issued a statement on Monday addressing the situation, clarifying that the omission was a result of the glitch and not an intentional exclusion. She emphasized that all qualified candidates had been certified for the 2024 General Election ballot, refuting misinformation circulating online.
Jacobsen reassured voters that no ballots had been impacted, including those that will be sent to registered absentee voters and those available at polling places on Election Day. The absentee voting process operates under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, allowing U.S. citizens overseas or on active duty to cast their votes within 45 days of the election.
