Josh Shapiro, born on June 20, 1973, in Kansas City, Missouri, is the 48th Governor of Pennsylvania. He was raised in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and attended the University of Rochester, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He later earned a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Shapiro’s early career included working for U.S. Senator Carl Levin and U.S. Representative Peter Deutsch. He also served as Chief of Staff for U.S. Representative Joe Hoeffel.
Shapiro entered politics in Pennsylvania by running for the state’s House of Representatives. He represented the 153rd District from 2005 to 2012. During this time, Shapiro worked on legislative issues related to government operations and fiscal matters. In 2011, he successfully ran for Montgomery County Commissioner and was later elected Chairman of the board.
In 2016, Shapiro ran for the office of Pennsylvania Attorney General, defeating Republican candidate John Rafferty. He was re-elected in 2020. While serving as Attorney General, Shapiro's office worked on cases related to the opioid crisis, consumer protection, and institutional abuse. His office was involved in a significant grand jury investigation into abuse within the Catholic Church, leading to the release of a detailed report on the findings.
In 2022, Shapiro ran for Governor of Pennsylvania as the Democratic candidate and won the election against Republican Doug Mastriano. He was inaugurated as Governor in January 2023. His administration has focused on managing state infrastructure, public health, and economic issues. Shapiro is married to Lori Shapiro, and they have four children.
