House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has issued a warning of contempt of Congress against Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Director Colette Peters. The warning came after the agency failed to provide documents and testimony regarding its treatment of Jason Galanis, a key witness in the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
Galanis, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, claims he faced retaliation from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the BOP after cooperating with congressional investigators. He testified earlier this year about his business ties with Hunter Biden and Devon Archer. Both Galanis and Archer were involved in a fraudulent tribal bonds scheme, which led to Galanis’ imprisonment.
Jordan's warning follows an April subpoena requesting documents related to the BOP's handling of Galanis, including the denial of his application for home confinement under the CARES Act. Despite BOP Director Peters' testimony in June, Jordan stated that the committee still lacks the necessary information for its investigation.
Jordan has indicated that if the BOP remains non-compliant with the subpoena, contempt of Congress proceedings may be considered.
