John Forbes Kerry is an American politician and diplomat born on December 11, 1943, in Aurora, Colorado. He served as the 68th United States Secretary of State from 2013 to 2017 under President Barack Obama. Kerry was a United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1985 to 2013. He chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2009 to 2013, playing a significant role in shaping U.S. foreign policy.
Kerry was the Democratic Party's nominee for President in the 2004 election but lost to President George W. Bush. Before entering politics, Kerry served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, earning the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts for his service.
