Thousands of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv, urging the government to increase efforts to secure the release of captives held in Gaza. The protests took place outside army headquarters, with demonstrators calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate a deal with Hamas to return approximately 100 Israeli captives.
The protests followed the discovery of six captives' bodies in Gaza. Families of the captives, who participated in the rallies, criticized Netanyahu's handling of the situation, expressing concern that a deal had not yet been reached. Yotam Cohen, brother of an Israeli soldier held in Gaza, stated, "This government is abandoning the captives to die."
Reports from Al Jazeera noted that some members of the public are dissatisfied with Netanyahu, who has stated that the war will continue until its objectives are achieved.
Tensions increased after the Israeli military released a video of the Gaza tunnels where the six captives' bodies were found. The footage showed the conditions of the tunnels, which lacked proper ventilation.
The conflict began in October of last year when Hamas-led fighters killed over 1,100 people in southern Israel and took around 250 captives. Israel’s military actions in Gaza have resulted in over 41,000 Palestinian deaths and widespread displacement.
