India’s Supreme Court has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister and opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal, marking a significant development in a high-profile corruption case. The court's decision comes nearly six months after Kejriwal's arrest in March, just weeks before India's general elections.
Kejriwal, a prominent figure in the opposition alliance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was arrested in connection with a long-running corruption probe. His detention raised concerns among his supporters, who accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the case for political gain. Kejriwal’s party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has consistently denied the allegations, calling the case politically motivated.
On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that while Kejriwal’s arrest was lawful, his continued detention was unnecessary as he contests the charges. Justice Surya Kant, in the ruling, stated that prolonged incarceration would deprive Kejriwal of his liberty.
Kejriwal’s release is expected to revitalize the AAP as it campaigns in the upcoming regional elections in Haryana. The charges against him stem from a controversial policy liberalizing liquor sales, with federal investigators accusing AAP of receiving kickbacks from contractors. Kejriwal and his party deny any wrongdoing.
This ruling brings renewed momentum to Kejriwal’s political ambitions, allowing him to rejoin the campaign trail.
