India has formally rejected comments made by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, regarding the treatment of Muslims in the country. On Monday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that Khamenei's remarks were "misinformed and unacceptable." The response followed a post from Khamenei on social media where he addressed the suffering of Muslims in regions such as India, Myanmar, and Gaza.
Despite their historically strong bilateral relations, including a recent 10-year agreement for the development of Iran's Chabahar Port, differences have arisen between India and Iran over issues related to Muslim communities, particularly in Kashmir. Human rights organizations have raised concerns over the treatment of Muslims in India, citing incidents of violence and discrimination.
This diplomatic exchange highlights ongoing tensions between India and Iran over human rights issues, even as both nations continue to maintain strong economic ties.
