House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has issued a subpoena to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seeking documents related to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s alleged connections to China. The subpoena follows concerns raised by whistleblowers about Walz’s purported ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
According to the whistleblowers, DHS personnel have expressed "serious concern" about Walz’s connections to China, which were documented in a Microsoft Teams group chat and several intelligence reports. These concerns reportedly date back to Walz's time as an English teacher in China in 1989 and his continued involvement with the country throughout the 1990s, including organizing student trips and spending his honeymoon there.
Comer’s investigation into the CCP’s influence in the U.S. has focused on efforts to infiltrate and influence subnational leaders, including state governors. In his letter to DHS, Comer emphasized the importance of understanding whether Walz, now the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, was involved, knowingly or unknowingly, in any CCP activities that could undermine U.S. security.
The subpoena is part of a broader effort by the committee to investigate CCP influence in the U.S. and ensure appropriate legislative reforms to safeguard the nation.
