The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, has been killed. The pro-Iranian militia confirmed his death on Saturday, following an Israeli military announcement that Nasrallah had been killed in a Friday airstrike targeting Hezbollah's headquarters in a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon. The Israeli military stated, "Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world."
In a statement on Telegram, Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah's death, saying he had joined "his great and immortal martyrs." The militia vowed to continue its fight in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defense of Lebanon and its people.
Following the news, gunfire erupted in Beirut, particularly in Hezbollah-controlled areas, as supporters of the Shiite militia took to the streets, waving Hezbollah flags. Nasrallah had led Hezbollah for over 30 years, aligning closely with Iran and its Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), Hezbollah's key backer.
The death of Nasrallah represents Israel's most significant strike against Hezbollah in decades. The airstrike, which also reportedly killed senior Hezbollah commanders, follows increasing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah since October 2023.
Iran condemned the airstrike, calling it a war crime, with President Massud Peseschkian accusing the U.S. of complicity in Nasrallah's death. Tehran also held a state-organized funeral for Nasrallah, with thousands chanting "revenge."
