More than 50 former HBCU athletes and coaches have publicly backed Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for the 2024 presidential election. This endorsement came in a letter released on National Black Voter Day. The athletes, including Super Bowl champions, hall of fame players, and top NFL draft picks, emphasized the importance of Harris's leadership and her HBCU experience.
In the letter, the athletes highlighted Harris's integrity, commitment to justice, and equality of opportunity, stating their confidence that she will serve the best interests of all Americans if elected as president. The letter also encouraged voters to educate themselves about both Harris, a graduate of Howard University, and former President Donald Trump to make informed decisions.
The endorsement followed criticism from Tony Dungy, a former NFL coach and Hall of Fame inductee. Dungy questioned Harris’s position on abortion, particularly regarding her statements about faith and reproductive rights. Dungy’s remarks came after Harris reiterated that faith does not need to be abandoned to support a woman’s right to make decisions about her body.
National Black Voter Day, organized by the National Urban League and Black Entertainment Television, aims to encourage Black Americans to register to vote ahead of the upcoming elections.
