Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech in suburban Atlanta on Friday, emphasizing her commitment to restoring reproductive freedoms if elected president. She stated, “When Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedoms, as president of the United States, I will so proudly sign it back into law.”
The speech highlighted the cases of two Georgia women, Amber Thurman and Candi Miller, who died after complications related to abortion pills. Harris discussed how Thurman was forced to travel out of state for an abortion due to Georgia's laws and died after experiencing a delay in receiving necessary medical care upon her return.
Harris criticized the existing laws, claiming they require doctors to wait until a patient is critically ill before intervening. However, the impact of Georgia’s legislation on Thurman's death is contested by groups like Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, which asserts that state laws do not prevent hospitals from providing emergency treatment.
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign responded, stating he does not support a federal abortion ban and backs exceptions for specific cases. Trump’s spokeswoman characterized Harris and the Democrats as out of touch with public sentiment on abortion.
Harris, campaigning heavily on reproductive rights since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, engaged a supportive crowd of approximately 600, who chanted slogans in favor of her message.
