A recent CBS News/YouGov poll indicates that Vice President Kamala Harris is narrowing the gap with former President Donald Trump regarding public perceptions of their economic strengths. Historically, Trump has outperformed Harris among voters concerned about the economy, particularly amidst dissatisfaction with inflation during the Biden administration and lingering memories of the pre-COVID economic landscape.
Currently, 47% of those who prioritize the economy support Harris, while 53% favor Trump. This marks a shift from last month, when Harris garnered only 43% and Trump 56%. Notably, Harris shows stronger support among voters who perceive the economy as improving.
Despite this progress, a significant majority—59%—still regard the national economy as very or fairly bad, a slight improvement from 62% the previous month. Conversely, 39% consider the economy to be very or fairly good, compared to 35% last month.
Trump continues to lead in immigration issues, where he remains popular among independents and swing voters. However, Harris has recently adopted a firmer stance on border security, leveraging her prosecutorial background. The poll, conducted from September 18-20 with a margin of error of +/- 2.2%, involved 3,129 registered voters.
