Vice President Kamala Harris has officially agreed to participate in the ABC News presidential debate against former President Donald Trump, though not without raising concerns over the debate's format. The debate, scheduled for Tuesday, has sparked controversy over the rule requiring muted microphones while each candidate speaks.
The Harris campaign initially resisted the rule, claiming it would put her at a disadvantage and attempted to renegotiate the terms. Last week, the campaign delayed signing off on the agreement, hoping to secure changes. However, after receiving assurances from ABC News, Harris accepted the rules on Wednesday.
According to CNN, ABC assured Harris’ team that microphones could be turned back on during moments of significant cross talk between the candidates. Additionally, moderators will clarify any exchanges missed by the audience due to muted mics.
Despite accepting the terms, the Harris campaign expressed frustration. In a letter to ABC News, they argued that muting microphones would unfairly limit direct exchanges between the candidates, benefiting Trump. However, the campaign chose not to risk Trump's withdrawal from the debate by insisting on rule changes.
ABC News stated that both campaigns agreed to the rules in May and denied making any additional agreements beyond the published format. Both candidates have voiced concerns over the format, but the debate will proceed as planned on Tuesday.
