Former National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster's recently published memoir, "At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House," has come under scrutiny from Fred Fleitz, a former chief of staff for the National Security Council during the Trump administration. McMaster, who served as national security advisor until 2018, was replaced by John Bolton.
Fleitz criticized McMaster’s portrayal of his tenure, particularly regarding the alleged strained relations with Trump. He specifically addressed McMaster's assertion that evidence of Russian interference in the election was "incontrovertible." Fleitz contended that McMaster misrepresented the situation and claimed that McMaster's comments aligned with the views of the New York Times editorial board but did not reflect Trump's perspective.
Fleitz further argued that as a cabinet member and national security advisor, McMaster should not have publicly disagreed with Trump on such a sensitive topic during an overseas conference. McMaster's memoir follows the publication of Bolton's own account, which similarly reflects traditional foreign policy views that contrast with Trump's approach.
