A gunman killed three security guards at the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge crossing between the occupied West Bank and Jordan on Sunday, prompting Israel to close all border crossings with Jordan. The attacker, arriving from Jordan’s al-Karameh town, exited a truck in the cargo area and opened fire on the guards.
The Israeli military reported that the guards were employed by a private security company, not part of the army or police. Israeli forces shot and killed the attacker, and an investigation is underway to determine if the truck was rigged with explosives.
This is the first attack of its kind at the Jordan-Israel border since Israel's conflict with Gaza intensified in October. The crossing is a key point for Jordanian goods entering the West Bank and the only option for Palestinians traveling to Jordan.
Jordanian authorities have launched their own investigation, and the Jordanian side of the crossing has been temporarily closed. The attack comes amid increased tensions following recent Israeli military operations in the West Bank, which have resulted in over 30 Palestinian deaths.
Israel’s offensive in Gaza, which has claimed more than 40,000 Palestinian lives, has drawn widespread international criticism, adding to the region's volatile situation. The incident at the crossing highlights ongoing security challenges along the heavily militarized border.
