Vice President Kamala Harris's financial advantage over former President Donald Trump is raising concerns among Republican operatives about the upcoming election in Pennsylvania. Veteran GOP strategists, speaking to the Washington Examiner on the condition of anonymity, noted that while winning Pennsylvania may not decide the election, it could significantly limit Trump’s path to victory. They highlighted Harris's substantial investment in the state, which could pose a challenge for Trump.
In August, the Harris campaign reported raising $190 million, compared to Trump’s $45 million. Harris's expenditures totaled $174 million, while Trump spent $61 million, leading to an outspending margin of around $5 million per day. In terms of direct advertising, Harris invested $137 million in August, compared to Trump’s $47 million. Specifically, in Pennsylvania, Harris and associated PACs have secured nearly $200 million in ad buys through November 5, while Trump’s team has booked just under $78 million, according to Business Insider.
One contributing factor to Harris's spending advantage is the Republican National Committee’s decision to reduce its grassroots operations after new leadership took charge. This has led the GOP to outsource many grassroots activities to super PACs. Consequently, Harris's campaign and the Democratic National Committee employed over 1,200 staffers in August, compared to 320 from Trump’s campaign and the RNC.
Despite these challenges, Trump’s campaign maintains some advantages in direct mail marketing and independent group spending. In August, groups supporting Trump spent $163 million, while those backing Harris spent $104 million. Trump's core PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., raised $25 million, receiving significant contributions from notable donors. Additionally, billionaire Elon Musk is reportedly contributing over $15 million to grassroots efforts.
Harris's fundraising efforts continue to thrive, as evidenced by a recent $27 million raised at a New York City event attended by prominent figures. She is expected to attract similar support at upcoming fundraisers in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Overall, strategists from both parties suggest that Harris's fundraising success indicates increased Democratic enthusiasm, contrasting with challenges faced during President Joe Biden's candidacy.
