Employees at a discount supermarket chain in Germany recently uncovered 95 kilograms (210 pounds) of cocaine concealed within crates of bananas, according to police reports released on Monday. The cocaine is estimated to have a street value of around €7 million ($7.8 million).
While the police did not disclose the name of the supermarket, they confirmed that the drugs were found at multiple locations in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The initial discovery occurred on September 10 at two stores in Mönchengladbach, where workers reported the presence of the cocaine. Subsequently, similar finds were made at stores in nearby cities, including Duisburg, Krefeld, Viersen, Heinsberg, and Neuss.
Authorities are investigating how the drugs ended up in the supermarket. Police believe that the chain was not the intended recipient of the delivery and received the crates by mistake. Investigators suspect that the shipment originated in South America, arriving at the Belgian port of Antwerp before being transported to the supermarket's distribution warehouse in Germany.
The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the circumstances surrounding this significant drug haul.
