German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Germany will not supply long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, regardless of decisions by NATO allies. Scholz highlighted the potential risks of escalating the conflict in Ukraine during a citizen's dialogue event in Prenzlau, Brandenburg. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously requested long-range weapons to target Russian logistics and military facilities beyond the front lines. Scholz reaffirmed Germany's position against such deliveries, stating that the decision would not change even if other countries proceed with similar support.
The Taurus cruise missiles have a range of approximately 500 kilometers, which could allow Ukraine to strike targets deep within Russian territory. Scholz reiterated the potential risks of providing such weapons in the ongoing conflict.
Scholz also addressed the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, calling for the prosecution of those responsible. Germany has issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian suspect connected to the incident. Scholz noted that the replacement of Russian gas has cost Germany over €100 billion.
