The Gaza Sunbirds, a group of 25 para-cyclists, have shifted their focus from training to humanitarian work due to the conflict in Gaza. Initially, the team trained regularly, promoting mobility and resilience for amputees. However, after the bombing of Gaza in October 2023, the cyclists started using their bikes to deliver essential supplies like food and shelter to their communities.
Alaa Al-Dali, a co-founder of the team, had lost his leg in 2018 during a protest but continued cycling and helped establish the Sunbirds. Despite the dangers and logistical challenges, the team has delivered over $300,000 in aid, including 72,000 kg of food and 225 shelters. Though the situation remains difficult, the Sunbirds’ efforts have brought hope to many, while Al-Dali continues to pursue his goal of competing internationally.
