Dominique Pelicot, a 71-year-old French man, has admitted to drugging his ex-wife, Gisele, and enabling her rape by dozens of men over nearly a decade. During his ongoing trial, Pelicot, who is facing charges of rape, gang rape, and privacy violations, apologized to his family in court.
Pelicot stated that his actions began after his wife refused to engage in partner swaps, linking his behavior to past trauma. He admitted to recording the assaults as a means to protect himself from potential blackmail by those involved.
The case has drawn significant public attention in France. Gisele, now a prominent figure in raising awareness about sexual violence, is present at the trial. Alongside Pelicot, 50 other men, aged 26 to 74, are also facing trial for their alleged roles in the assaults. The trial is set to continue through December, and the defendants face potential sentences of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
