House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-Md.) stated on Thursday that while he does not support a government shutdown at the moment, he might consider one as a negotiating tactic in December. Speaking on the "John Solomon Reports" podcast, Harris explained that a shutdown close to the 2024 election may not be ideal, but the situation could shift by December if Republicans gain more political leverage.
Elected officials face a September 30 deadline to pass a budget or continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown. On Wednesday, the GOP-led House failed to pass a continuing resolution that included the SAVE Act, with a vote of 202-220. Harris emphasized that while he supports using leverage in negotiations, he does not currently back a shutdown, diverging from former President Donald Trump, who suggested a shutdown if the SAVE Act resolution did not pass.
Harris expressed that a potential shutdown in December could be used more effectively if Republicans hold the House, win a Senate majority, and reclaim the White House.
