Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm, has claimed the lives of four people in St. Lucie County. The county’s medical examiner confirmed the fatalities Thursday morning as the storm moved off Florida’s central-east coast. The hurricane, which started as a Category 5, has since been downgraded to a Category 1 storm.
In addition to the loss of life, the storm caused widespread flooding and left around three million people without power across the state. St. Lucie County officials also confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in the region, further contributing to the damage.
Erick Gill, a spokesperson for St. Lucie County, reported that some of the deaths occurred in a mobile home park. Emergency crews were on-site, assisting displaced residents and providing medical assistance to those in need.
The storm continues to affect large portions of the state, with multiple tornadoes reported, further complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
