Former President Donald Trump voiced concerns over his family's safety ahead of the upcoming election, citing a rise in violence across the country. Trump made these comments during an interview on Fox News’s One Nation with Brian Kilmeade, following an assassination attempt on his life on September 15, the second in just over two months.
When asked if he worries about his family’s safety, Trump responded that he does, although he doesn’t often speak about it publicly. He remarked, "We’re under siege, and no country has ever suffered like we have in the last three and a half, almost four years." He further emphasized the increase in illegal immigration, claiming that veterans are being overlooked in favor of those entering the country illegally. He suggested that illegal immigrants are being housed in better conditions than veterans.
Trump commented on his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who is scheduled to debate Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), on October 1. Trump expressed skepticism about the fairness of the network hosting the debate, CBS News, but stated that Vance would handle the situation well.
Earlier in September, Trump and Harris faced off in a debate hosted by ABC News, which received criticism for how it was conducted. Following the debate, Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) requested that the network disclose any communication it had with Harris's campaign before the event.
