India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, on charges of tampering with evidence in a rape and murder case. The case involves the death of a 31-year-old junior female doctor at the college in August.
Along with Ghosh, police officer Abhijit Mondal was also arrested. According to the CBI, Ghosh and others allegedly delayed reporting the victim's death and filing a First Information Report (FIR), which resulted in the loss of important evidence. The CBI has filed additional charges against both men in court. Ghosh had already been in custody on unrelated corruption charges since September 2.
The victim’s death led to protests from junior doctors in West Bengal, demanding justice and enhanced safety measures for women in the workplace. Citizens have also organized protests in Kolkata and other cities in India, requesting improved safety in hospitals.
Mondal, who was in charge of the police station responsible for the medical college, was charged with failing to secure the crime scene. A senior Kolkata police official stated that the charges will be addressed in court.
The prime suspect in the case had been arrested earlier by Kolkata police and charged with rape and murder. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, crimes against women in India increased by 4 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year.
Protests and demands for justice in this case are ongoing.
