Central Europe is grappling with widespread flooding after days of heavy rainfall, affecting Austria, Poland, Romania, and the Czech Republic. At least eight people have died, including six in Romania, with more missing. Thousands have been evacuated, and further rainfall is forecast.
In the Czech Republic, 10,000 residents of Opava were urged to evacuate, with other towns like Krnov and Jesenik also experiencing severe flooding. Prime Minister Petr Fiala warned that the worst may not be over, as water levels continue to rise.
Austria declared a disaster zone in Lower Austria, where dams are at risk of bursting, and more than 1,000 homes have been evacuated. A firefighter lost his life while assisting in flood relief efforts.
Poland is also battling the floods, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk describing the situation in Lower Silesia as "dramatic." Helicopters have been used to rescue stranded residents from rooftops, and a collapsed bridge added to the region’s challenges.
The situation remains critical as authorities across the region brace for more flooding in the coming days.
