The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is under scrutiny following a five-year investigation into the illegal export of long-tailed macaques. The investigation, known as "Operation Long Tail Liberation," aimed to address allegations of wild-caught macaques being falsely labeled as captive-bred for export to the United States.
USFWS Director Martha Williams testified during a congressional hearing, defending the operation, which resulted in several indictments. However, concerns have been raised about the operation's overall effectiveness, particularly its potential impact on U.S. research. Since China banned the export of macaques in 2020, there are warnings that the U.S. may face difficulties in securing a stable supply of these animals for medical research.
Additionally, watchdog group Protect the Public’s Trust filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the Department of Justice, accusing the agency of withholding key communications related to the investigation.
