European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has introduced her nominees for the upcoming European Union executive team, which will lead the bloc for the next five years. The new commission will address key challenges, including the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, migration, climate change, and economic competitiveness. The nominees must be approved by the European Parliament, with confirmation expected by late October.
Von der Leyen highlighted the priorities of the new team, focusing on "prosperity, security, and democracy." Estonia’s Kaja Kallas has been nominated for foreign policy, while Lithuania’s Andrius Kubilius will serve as the EU’s first defence commissioner. Finland’s Henna Virkkunen will oversee security and technology, and France’s Stephane Sejourne will lead on European competitiveness. Italy’s Raffaele Fitto has been assigned to cohesion and reforms.
The commission includes 11 women, representing 40% of the proposed members.
