A new wave of violence erupted in the Mexican state of Sinaloa on Saturday, September 14, 2024, resulting in several deaths. The violence stems from ongoing clashes between two rival factions of the infamous Sinaloa cartel. The most recent incident adds to a rising death toll, now reported at 15 fatalities since the beginning of the week.
According to a statement from the Sinaloa State Public Security Department, three civilians were killed during a confrontation between the military and armed individuals. This follows five deaths recorded on Friday evening in the town of Concordia, attributed to organized crime groups.
Additionally, the Mexican Public Security Department reported two more homicides on Saturday. However, it remains unclear whether these deaths are directly linked to the ongoing cartel disputes that have left civilians living in fear. Authorities have also reported kidnappings in the region, fueling concerns of forced recruitments by the criminal factions. "My cousins stayed locked inside their home. My aunt doesn't want them to go out because there are rumors that criminals are recruiting people," said Estefania, a resident of the state capital, Culiacan.
The confrontations are believed to be related to a power struggle between factions loyal to Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, known as the "Chapitos."
