Election results for the upcoming presidential race may be delayed across the country due to differing state rules on receiving and counting mail ballots, ongoing litigation, and potential investigations. Election integrity advocates warn that such delays could lead to disputes over the legitimacy of the results.
Jason Snead, Executive Director of the Honest Elections Project, highlighted concerns that delays, particularly in close races, may create opportunities for either side to claim the election has been compromised. He pointed to the 2020 election, when results were delayed, and similar issues are anticipated this year due to mail-in ballots, legal challenges, and procedural investigations.
Several states, including Arizona and Pennsylvania, are expected to be key battlegrounds where delays may occur. In Arizona’s Maricopa County, officials anticipate a lengthy counting process due to a high volume of mail-in ballots. In Pennsylvania, restrictions on processing mail-in ballots prior to Election Day could lead to prolonged counting, with concerns about certification and litigation further complicating the process.
Recent polling shows a tight race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, increasing the likelihood of delayed results. As various states handle ballots differently, the final outcome may not be known for days after Election Day.
