The ongoing conflict in Gaza has significantly affected the education system, with many children and university students starting their second year without formal schooling. The war has damaged or destroyed a large portion of Gaza's educational infrastructure, displacing students and hindering their ability to continue their education.
Lana Haroun, a student who had recently enrolled at Al-Azhar University, was preparing for her first year of university studies when hostilities began in October 2023, following attacks by Hamas militants in southern Israel. Like many others, Haroun’s education was disrupted as her family faced displacement, and her university was damaged during the conflict.
According to the United Nations, 92.9% of schools in Gaza have suffered some form of damage, with 84.6% requiring either full reconstruction or significant repairs. Many schools have also been converted into shelters, preventing students from resuming their education.
Aid organizations are providing support for displaced students, including offering virtual learning opportunities, but the scale of the disruption poses significant challenges as the conflict continues.
