Police have released intense body cam footage showing the dramatic arrest of Ryan Wesley Routh, the man suspected of attempting a second assassination on former President Donald Trump. Routh, 58, was apprehended Sunday near a golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump had been playing. Armed with an SKS-style rifle, Routh had allegedly set up a makeshift sniper nest and waited for up to 12 hours to target Trump.
The footage, released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, captures the moment officers confronted Routh as he attempted to flee in a vehicle with stolen plates. The video shows law enforcement shouting commands as Routh, dressed in grey pants and a pink shirt, raised his hands and slowly backed toward the officers before being handcuffed.
According to authorities, Routh was spotted by a Secret Service agent, who opened fire before the would-be assassin fled the scene. A witness noted the getaway car’s license plate, leading to his eventual arrest. The FBI believes Routh had meticulously planned the assassination attempt.
Routh now faces multiple charges, including firearm possession by a convicted felon. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. This marks the second time in two months that Trump has survived an assassination attempt, prompting increased security at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
