Dozens of Hezbollah members were seriously wounded on Tuesday after the handheld pagers they use for communication exploded across Lebanon. The incident, described by Lebanese state media and officials as a significant security breach, marks one of the group's most severe setbacks in nearly a year of conflict with Israel.
Among those injured was Iran's ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, according to reports from Iran’s Mehr news agency. The explosions occurred in multiple locations, including southern Lebanon, the east, and Beirut’s southern suburbs, triggering widespread panic.
A Hezbollah official, speaking anonymously, called it the group’s "biggest security breach" since the war with Israel began.
Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Beirut, indicated that the devices were likely hacked and detonated in a coordinated attack. “We have seen pictures of wounded men across Lebanon,” Khodr noted, while hospitals have requested blood donations to treat the injured.
This breach marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
