Democrats in the House of Representatives have introduced a new resolution to counter claims made by top Republicans regarding Haitian immigrants in Ohio. The resolution, led by the House Haiti Caucus, seeks to celebrate the contributions of Haitian immigrants and denounce the spread of misinformation that has led to increased threats against the community. Representative Maxwell Frost (D-FL) presented the resolution on Friday.
The resolution comes in response to allegations made by former President Donald Trump and Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), who claimed that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were abducting and eating pets. These unfounded claims have fueled fear and led to bomb threats targeting Haitian communities.
During a press conference, several Democratic lawmakers, including Representative Yvette Clarke (D-NY) and Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford (D-NV), condemned the racist rhetoric. They highlighted the harmful impact the claims have had on Haitian immigrants, urging for an end to the false accusations.
Springfield officials have already denied the rumors, but the misinformation has continued to spread, with Trump repeating the claims during a debate. In response, Democrats are pushing for a strong condemnation of such fearmongering, emphasizing the need to protect immigrant communities from racist attacks.
