Democrats are launching a new campaign against Republican Maryland Senate candidate Larry Hogan, portraying him as a disingenuous critic of former President Donald Trump. This strategy contrasts with the narrative presented by Hogan's rival, Angela Alsobrooks, who has labeled him a “MAGA”-supporting figure that could empower Republicans in the Senate.
Hogan's campaign counters this by emphasizing his history of opposing Trump. Campaign spokeswoman Blake Kernen stated, "Governor Hogan has been the leading Republican speaking out against Donald Trump from the beginning." She highlighted Hogan’s commitment to Maryland voters and his willingness to challenge the Republican Party.
As the Senate race becomes unexpectedly competitive in a state that Biden won by over 30 points, Maryland Democrats, including prominent lawmakers, are criticizing Hogan for not sufficiently opposing Trump’s policies during his tenure as governor. Representative Jamie Raskin remarked that Hogan did not take a strong stance against Trump’s actions.
Senator Chris Van Hollen and former Attorney General Brian Frosh have also criticized Hogan for allegedly obstructing efforts to hold the Trump administration accountable.
Despite his past remarks acknowledging Trump’s judicial appointments, Hogan insists he will not support Trump if elected to the Senate, aiming to create a GOP majority while distancing himself from national Republican figures.
