At least 11 people have been killed, and nine others are missing after torrential rains caused severe flooding in southern Morocco. The heavy rainfall began on Friday, affecting the provinces of Tata, Tiznit, and Errachidia, destroying homes and cutting off vital infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and communication networks. The extreme weather, described by meteorologists as an “exceptional climate phenomenon,” has brought unusually heavy rainfall to typically arid regions.
In some areas, such as Tagounite near the Algerian border, up to 170mm of rain fell, while Ouarzazate received 47mm within just three hours. The floods also swept through the rural Tata region, where eight homes were washed away by the rising waters. These rains follow a six-year drought that had severely impacted water levels in Morocco.
In neighboring Algeria, at least one person has died, and another remains missing due to the floods. Authorities have rescued several families from flooded rivers, particularly in the regions of Illizi and Bechar.
The unprecedented weather has left a trail of destruction, with dozens of homes damaged and entire streets submerged in water, prompting widespread rescue efforts in both countries.
