Dan Hurley, born on January 16, 1973, in Jersey City, New Jersey, is an American college basketball coach currently serving as the head coach of the University of Connecticut (UConn) men's basketball team. Hurley comes from a prominent basketball family, with his father, Bob Hurley Sr., being a legendary high school basketball coach, and his brother, Bobby Hurley, a former NBA player and current college basketball coach.
Hurley played college basketball at Seton Hall University from 1991 to 1996, where he was a point guard for the Pirates under coach P.J. Carlesimo. After his playing career, Hurley transitioned into coaching, beginning as an assistant at St. Anthony High School, where his father coached. He later took on head coaching positions at the high school level before moving into the college ranks.
In 2010, Hurley became the head coach at Wagner College, a small Division I program in Staten Island, New York. During his two seasons at Wagner, Hurley transformed the team, leading them to a 25-win season in 2011-2012, one of the best in the school’s history. His success at Wagner earned him a position as the head coach at the University of Rhode Island in 2012.
Hurley spent six seasons at Rhode Island, where he rebuilt the program and led the Rams to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2017 and 2018. His success in turning around Rhode Island’s basketball program attracted attention from larger programs, and in 2018, he was named the head coach of UConn’s men's basketball team.
At UConn, Hurley took over a program with a rich basketball history but was in need of revitalization. He quickly implemented a disciplined and defensive-minded style of play. Under his leadership, UConn returned to national prominence, culminating in a strong performance in the NCAA Tournament. Hurley’s ability to recruit top talent and develop players has been a key factor in the team's resurgence.
