Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) stated on Thursday that a senior Homeland Security official approached him as a whistleblower and claimed U.S. authorities are aware of five assassination teams targeting former President Donald Trump. Gaetz said three of the teams are foreign-inspired, while two are domestic.
Gaetz revealed this information shortly before a second assassination attempt on Trump at his Palm Beach golf course, where an armed suspect was apprehended. The congressman expressed concern over insufficient security for Trump, noting that protection resources had been diverted to other figures, including First Lady Jill Biden.
One Pakistani man, Asif Merchant, has been charged for collaborating with Iran in a failed assassination plot against Trump in July. Additionally, other U.S. officials, including former Presidents George W. Bush and Mike Pompeo, have faced similar threats linked to foreign actors, primarily as retaliation for the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
Authorities continue to investigate these plots and enhance security measures for current and former U.S. officials.
